Custom-crafted wooden lattice panels with a steel frame were used to add sliding doors that blur the line between the interior and the world outside. The clever use of metal acoustic tiles and a breezy and cheerful ambiance along with comfy contemporary décor complete this stylish Brazilian retreat.
Having started as a simple refurbishment of the lower level living area the project became a full-fledged overhaul when the architects realized that the fundamental structure of the house was unsound. The new living area contains the kitchen sitting zone and dining area on the lower level of the residence that opens up towards the rear patio.
The second level hosts the kids’ playroom that would be transformed into a productive workspace with time and a mudroom that offers ample storage space. Kids’ bedrooms and additional utility areas occupy this floor while the third level contains the master suite home office and expansive breezy deck.
Instead of encroaching on an already limited backyard Thomas Balaban Architecte decided to give the modest home two rooftop volumes turning it into an elegant and spacious contemporary residence. Home to a young couple with three children the smart extension preserved and enhanced the small rear yard turning it into play area for kids and a relaxation zone for adults.
Using two intersecting volumes the architects aimed to overcome the challenge of creating a stylish spacious and organic family home with a light-filled and airy interior. It is the lower levels of the two volumes that house the large living area and an additional family room along with a sleek modern kitchen in white and a lovely dining space.
